QUEEN OF THE MOST HOLY ROSARY CHAPEL Ponchatoula, LA. (Originally located in Manchac, LA.) |
Of all the churches in the New Orleans area, this
one has a most interesting history. The chapel, originally founded by Father
John L. Curran, O.P., originally served the small community of Manchac
which is located at the pass between Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.
After some years, it was abandoned as restaurants were built around it.
On his death bed, Father Curran made a request of his friend, Mr. Charles
Pugh to save the chapel that he so loved. Shortly before the church would
have been destroyed by Hurricane Juan, Mr. Pugh moved it to land just
south of the town of Ponchatoula, where he restored it and made it available
for use by worshipers. Bishop Ott, of the Baton Rouge Diocese, allowed
the chapel to remain an operating, consecrated church. |
