CHINESE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 2901 W Esplanade Ave, Kenner, LA |
VISIT THE OFFICIAL WEB SITE OF THIS CHURCH
The Chinese Presbyterian Church is one of the older Presbyterian congregations in the area, having its beginning in 1882. It was originally an outgrowth of the Canal Street Presbyterian Church and is one of only five or six Chinese Presbyterian congregations in the United States. For many years, the church was located at 2525 Benevolent Street in the Mid-City area of New Orleans. In addition to its rich heritage and service to the community, the church sponsors a notable Chinese New Year Race to raise funds. Interestingly, the church has always been a multi-lingual facility. In its earlier days, services were in Chinese with translation to English. In recent years, the trend has reversed as most of the members now are English speaking. The Chinese Presbyterian Church began as a class of five Chinese men who came to learn English and hear the Gospel. It soon became a mission for Chinese settlers in New Orleans. In 1957, the mission was organized into a regular church congregation. |
